As far back as I can recall I've been drawn to color, texture and dimension, and their limitless variety of combinations. When I was young I would lay in the cool grass of my father’s pear orchard, under a canopy of leaves. Other than the sky peeking through, the only color was green, but oh, so many shades of green.
Today I retell my life experiences through a collage of papers, fabric, paint and an occasional found treasure. I enjoy collecting local leaves and using them to make initial marks on my surface. I have painted using leaves as a part of my work through out my career.
The technique of collage is my preferred method; I love the rich textures and line you get by the layering of delicate papers and paint. The movement of paint and water against these layers is exciting to me, and gives my work an abstract quality.
Throughout each day, I find joy in taking notice of the details of my surroundings, on my daily walk, tending to my plants, or during my travels.
Robert Genn used the term "Miksang or Good Eye. The idea behind Miksang is to find joy and awareness by attending to the minor and seemingly insignificant. The colours, patterns and textures that exist in the close up world." This thought process ensures I bring enthusiasm and fresh inspiration into my studio and into each painting I create.
